The Cluster Foodservice is involved in the development of two projects that opt for Next Generation EU funds. Endowed with € 750,000 million, the Next Generation EU funds will contribute to the reconstruction of the European Union after the pandemic and will support investment in ecological and digital transitions.
One of the projects in which the Cluster participates is Alternative Protein, which proposes the development of a hub for innovation and the production of products derived from vegetable protein (plant-based meat). The project has several components linked to different points in the value chain; from the promotion and conservation of plant genetic resources, specifically legumes of indigenous varieties, to the manufacture of the final product, through the production plants of protein concentrate and texturing.
It is in line with the European Commission’s ecological transition strategy, “From the farm to the table”, based on a reduction in greenhouse gases and a sustainable transition in the production of the European and Western food system, which forces us to explore and research new areas of food development.
In addition to the Cluster Foodservice, other actors involved in the definition and execution of the project are the Generalitat de Catalunya, INNOVACC, the company Zyrcular Foods or IRTA, among others. The project has already been pre-selected by the government of the Generalitat de Catalunya to apply for funding.
The SOSSOIA project (Project for Social and Food Sustainability), promoted by the Commission on Circular Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (CECIC) of the General Council of Chambers of Catalonia, in direct collaboration with the Food Bank of Barcelona, also aims to get access to the Next Generation EU funds. This project aims to design, implement methodologies and structure them digitally in order to try to reduce waste in the field of companies in the food industry and its distribution, with a special focus on SMEs, and take advantage of these surpluses for entities with social purposes that manage the food of the most disadvantaged groups.
