III Sustainability Day

On December 17, the III Sustainability Day: Food & Packaging Day, co-organized by the Foodservice cluster and the Packaging cluster, took place at the old DAMM Star Factory. The event was a success; both at the attendance level and the day, with more than 130 professionals in the packaging and food sector and with the subsequent Christmas lunch, with more than a hundred representatives from the different companies in the two clusters.The purpose of the event was to integrate sustainability into all business and economic activities in an efficient and profitable way, through the presentation of successful cases that explained the concept of 3R-Reduce, Recycle, Reuse-. That is why a series of specialized talks were given on the subject, ending with a round table in which to discuss different issues that had arisen during the morning.

Rafael Fernández-Álava, Marketing and Communication Director of Costa Cruceros, started the cycle of presentations with the presentation of the 4GOODFOOD project, in collaboration with the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation (Italy) to control the waste of food and the reuse of food. food surplus from ships. According to Rafael “The project is managing to reduce food surplus by 50%, and has distributed more than 70,000 meals and dinners in collaboration with the Food Bank”

Javier Mir Gubern, Marketing Director of Frit Ravich, continued the cycle by exposing the project “Optimization of Nuts & Popcorn Rolls” to reduce the consumption of plastic by adjusting and standardizing the coils, achieving a reduction in plastic emission in 18tn / year.

The talks continued with Marta Álvarez, Area Quality Manager, explaining the latest conclusions of the “Circular Journey” project, a journey that aims to reduce the environmental impact they generate by eliminating or reducing certain materials. disposable plastics. Also, the counselor of Zyrcular Foods and controller of the Vall Companys Group, Santi Aliaga, showed us the hard process involved in integrating vegetable protein in the current market from its origin until its subsequent commercialization. An interesting presentation that went through the context that is happening in the meat at present, based on its category, and the trends that are observed in the consumer, such as a greater responsibility for purchasing or investing in eco products.

 Aida Cierco, Sustainability Manager at Klöckner Pentaplast, updated attendees on the latest legislative updates. In his presentation, he demonstrated the sustainability strategy they are pursuing from KP, in line with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and the legislative framework within which plastic operates to increase its recyclability and responsible reuse.

At the end of the session, a number of experts met at the round table entitled “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle to Eliminate-Expand-Evolve”, moderated by Sergi Escuriet of Lubrizol. The participants were: Ignacio Martos, Duni; Victoria Ferrer, Recovery Guild; Esther Carreras, La Fageda; Pere Coll, Enplater and Marta Álvarez, Areas.

During the round table, various questions were asked about the plastic and its recyclability, which are being asked by the different Packaging companies, to follow the legislation. The position of recyclers also arose when it comes to the recyclability of tetrabrik packaging or chemical recycling, and who advises them in each case. Due to the lively debate, several formulas were presented to work on the circular economy objectives by 2030 and the European Plastics Strategy, as well as the logistical resources to adjust the traceability of products in the production chain, for social and environmental benefit. .

At the end of the day, the associates of both clusters enjoyed the Christmas lunch in the same premises of the Old Star Factory DAMM, in an unbeatable atmosphere and an exquisite menu.
